How walkable is your neighborhood?

Have you ever calculated your Walk Score? Walk Score helps people find walkable places to live. I am a city dweller and I feel very lucky to have access to my daily needs by foot. Someone today was telling me how they are moving to 40 acres a few counties north of Seattle. I honestly can't imagine. I really can't even imagine living in the suburbs. Within a half mile of my house, I have access to a grocery store, a library, ten restaurants, four coffee shops, a gas station, a drug store, the post office, four preschools, 2 schools (one public and one private) and numerous other shops (books store, wine bar, boutiques, etc). My 'hood scored an 89 out of 100.

How does your neighborhood score?

  1. Being able to walk to places and not have to get in the car is very liberating and that's something that I love. Luckily I get a little taste of it when I walk outside my office.

  2. That is a cool tool, although I'm not sure how accurate it is. It didn't list a few restaurants, etc that are actually in my neighborhood. In any case, my address gets a 42 out of 100. Not great. I live in a pretty urban suburb of Chicago. I can walk to a library, bakeries, train, restaurants, banks, coffee shops, hardware store, school. I really can't walk to the grocery, even though it's only 1.5 miles away unless I pull a wagon for all my groceries. But in the summer, especially, there are many days that I don't use my car at all. We looked at other suburbs that were MUCH more car-oriented and I decided I couldn't do it for that reason.

Someone was moving to a house on 40 acres? That's not suburban! That's rural!

  3. You DO have the best neighborhood for walking... something I miss a lot about living in Denver. I could see myself splitting my time between a downtown dwelling and a 100 acre ranch in the middle of Montana or someplace you do not see a soul - only nature and animals (my husband being one of those animals!). My soul rides the fence... I need both solitude and a social outlet!
